59 Seconds – Book Review

59secs

I was recently recommended this book by a colleague of mine.

59 Seconds, How Psychology Can Improve Your Life in Less Than a Minute by Richard Wiseman.

Initially, I thought this was going to be more of a business management kind of book, but soon realised it is a Self-Help book. However, I must say that it is an interesting read. I’m very much a techie (as you might already know) and any studies that has scientific backings usually interests me.

This book is very much in that alley!

It looks at happiness, motivation, persuasion and others from a scientific angle. For example, the usual self-help books will tell you to always visualise positive thoughts and etc., but never really had any proof that it works. The author of this book tells you exactly why positive thoughts doesn’t always work and backs it up with sample studies and etc.

If you are not into self-help books, it is still a good read (take it like an article you come across in a magazine). Not the type of book that requires you to read cover-to-cover… “RECOMMENDED!”

It’s been a while…

Finally made the jump to Singapore after 7 long years in Sydney about a month and a half back. I do miss Sydney in many ways but I suppose a good sea change is long overdue. I had always thought that the move would be difficult given that I do really love Australia so much. Somehow, I just fitted in nicely! I do intend to go back to Aussie one day…

The new job has been good to me, couldn’t be happier but still, the frequent traveling between Adriani and myself makes things hard. The new apartment is still far from complete, so will still be homeless for a while now.

Exam results are out and Uni is over and done with!

It is amazing how much better I have done in my second attempt in uni compared to the first time. The second-time around, much more pressure with work put into the picture and still I’ve come out on top.

The sad part of it is, I just wonder how much weight will this good performance pull in the future, given that after a couple of years working, experience counts for more than mere university studies…

So what are your thoughts on this?

Sleepless nights…. Again!

It is close to 2.45am in the morning and I’m still awake. Not so much because I want to, but simply because I can’t sleep. Have been having issues with sleep recently. I know it is because of the thought of some exciting news coming my way, and I hope it happens this time and not like bum fluff times before.

Anyway, all of a sudden I had this urge to listen to an old song by the Beatles at 2.45am in the morning, and I would like to share it with the blog!

Exams Exams…

Just completed 1 of 2 exams for this semester last night. Sometimes I just wonder, if the guys who set the exam paper even actually have a go at it first themselves to see if there is even enough time to complete the entire thing. In my case, I knew most of answers and I could write extremely fast. Even then I was still struggling to complete. I just feel sorry for those who writes a little slower and might not know the answers completely. And being an open book exam, you bring in all this printed materials that you don’t even have time to flip through. Why bother…
